Tales of Fantasy Preview

Here’s a new reason for us to play! From the people who gave us Tales of Pirates and Angels Online, IGG takes another shot with a new game: Tales of Fantasy. Following the current trend, Tales of Fantasy is set in an oriental-styled world, somehow reminiscent of Perfect World and Twelve Sky. From the looks of it, IGG is trying to take on the big leagues with their newest flagship game. And Tales of Fantasy is looking to be their best bet so far!

As I first investigated the game, I scratched my head on one promotion IGG did. There was no character wipe after closed beta. It’s definitely a deviation from the norm. The relationship between closed and open beta players will definitely be different. There will be a sense of seniority and a sense of competition. Right now, you can just imagine how tight the rivalry will be once the game goes live! Apart from the faction-based PvP we’ve come to love, there’s that heightened challenge of taking on the veterans. 

Adding to the challenge is the diversity of classes in the game. Players can access over 10 distinct archetypes with different battle styles. Warriors, Rogues, Mages, and Healers can specialize further to Gladiator, Sentinel, Marksman, Assassin, Summoner, Archmage, Druid and Priest. In addition, players have the ability to attack even while mounted on their elegant steed. If you’re particularly careful about planning your character, don’t worry. Upon changing jobs, the skill window reveals all the skills for your pre-planning needs. 

Moving on, character creation has a simple approach. There are a few customization choices for the face and the hair. Perhaps the highlight of this process is the body selection of either a child or an adult. Players can also select their nation and “style,” similar to races. Each style has its own advantages and disadvantages on the character’s stat build. It felt like playing Mabinogi again when I first walked with the little boy character I created. It’s unique, and the thought of a kid attacking an adult character or a monster twice his size was actually funny.

Tales of Fantasy’s most distinctive feature is the Soul Fusion system. Players can sacrifice some gear to create soul crystals, which in turn will give the player a permanent stat boost. It’s a nice touch and it substitutes the automated stat distribution per level, adding a hint of character management in the game. Other features include a horse race minigame, and daily events from the GMs and automated by the game itself. Your stay won’t definitely be a boring walk through the open country. Besides, even without the events, there’s plenty to do with hundreds of quests in store for the characters. 

Just like Tales of Pirates, we’re looking at a 3D world at par with Jade Dynasty’s graphics. This is definitely an improvement and a great departure from IGG’s usual 2D and 2.5D graphical presentation. A bigger plus is the game’s capability to run on lower-end PCs. No need to worry about your video card. 

I commend IGG for such a noble attempt to be at par with the more popular games like Perfect World and Jade Dynasty. Tales of Fantasy feels like it could deliver. From what I see, Tales of Fantasy is off to a good start. If the features interest you, I suggest taking it out for a spin. It might be your next Oriental and fantastic journey.
