Released to Open Beta in July 2008, Stone Age 2 is a very new game yet it looks and plays like a much older game. Stone Age 2 seems to be the most recent 2D, Turn Based MMORPG in a new trend. Recently, many games like this have been released and they all share many qualities. Myth War Online, Fairyland Online, and Elf Online are all 2D Turn Based MMORPGs where players fight alongside a pet.

Stone Age 2 has limited graphic options and a max resolution of 1024x—786 but makes up for this with a large cast of character models. Players can choose from 12 character models, ranging from little boys and girls to buff cavemen. Each character has four color schemes and several eye and mouth styles to pick from. There are four stats in Stone Age 2 and they are: Energy, Strength, Quickness, and Spiritual. Players are given 20 points at character creation to distribute among these four stats. Players are also given 100 spirit points to distribute among the four elements: Fire, Water, Leaf, and Wind. Each element is strong and weak against another. After character creation, players must choose between three starter towns, one located near the shore, another in the frigid north, or one near the mountains. New players are prompted to enter a beginner area where the game's basics are explained through NPCs. Luckily, players are able to enter and exit this zone when ever they want and can avoid it all together if they desire. Like the other Turn Based games, players in Stone Age 2 fight alongside a pet. Beginner pets include little hogs, chickens and other such animals but stronger ones can be tamed later on. Combat is straight forward enough; random encounters can happen at anytime while wandering around outside town. Players can attack, defend, use items, or cast spells. Similarly, players can give the same set of commands to their pet or simply opt to let the AI handle the pet's actions.

Stone Age 2 has a very plain User Interface, arguably too plain. I ended up dieing once since I had no idea what my current HP was. An HP/MP bar at the top of the screen seems like an obvious feature that was neglected. The mini map is functional but areas must be explored before they are shown. This might encourage exploration but I found it frustrating. There are no classes in Stone Age 2, leaving players free to grow their character as they please. With a level cap of 500+, players are not likely to max out for a long time.

At the time of the Open Beta, Stone Age 2 has from a very small community. There is nothing more discouraging than wandering around a new MMORPG alone. The dull and repetitive scenery and battle screens in Stone Age 2 don't help this matter much either. But Stone Age 2 does have some great features with which to lure in a larger community. It is a rare thing to see MMORPGs with player housing these days so the fact that every player starts with a small den that can be enlarged and decorated is reassuring. Players can also participate in PvP through duels. There are several brackets based on level which ensures players fight others in their level range. Stone Age 2 has a unique setting and some interesting features but is unlikely to win over gamers who don't like turn based combat. The graphics are clean but unimpressive though they might appeal to people with older computers. If the combat system interests you or you're looking for something that feels like an old school RPG, give Stone Age 2 a try.
