Dekaron Review

by Cody Hargreaves

Which MMO do you play? In a world with over 200 free MMOs available that seems to be the only question that makes any sense anymore. Quality is no longer an issue, GFX certainly don’t make the game, and longevity is only relevant to those that play the same game for longer than a few weeks. So, which MMO do you play, and more importantly, why?

It’s a question of community, if my findings are anything to go by. While some players prefer their gaming fast and furious, opting to kill their company in all-out PvP, and others find comfort in the quiet and cooperative, questing in groups and working as a team; it’s the community that keeps them coming back. Forums, PvP Guilds, Questing Parties and Castle Sieges — the MMO is a social experience above everything else, and in this gamers opinion, it’s the only reason we play. It has to be, right? Nothing else makes sense.

WHY DO WE PLAY?
Take Dekaron (A.K.A 2 Moons) for example, as it’s the reason we’re here today; when I logged in yesterday, the world of Dekaron was packed. There were people everywhere, and I found myself completely confused. Dekaron isn’t a good MMO; I knew that after 5 minutes. It looks terrible, it’s fundamentally grind-based and quest deprived, it lacks direction on even the most mundane level, and at least half of the population appears to be limited almost exclusively to bots and hackers. Yet there must be thousands of people playing it at any given time. Why?

Could it be the other features; such as action-orientated gameplay, large class selection, fishing mini-games, and open-world ‘watch-you-back’ style PvP? Unlikely. I’ve seen that before, and it looked a hell of a lot better, too. It has to be the community. It has to be the people. It has to be the world, the challenge, the sweet taste of victory and the bitter taste of revenge. Nothing else makes sense.

There’s a magic in Dekaron that can’t be seen or controlled or predicted by any developer in the world. It’s a direct result of a large group of people coming together, and without realising it, creating a world in which they feel they truly belong; and I talk about that today, because it’s the only thing that matters. There’s little point in me delving into the mechanics of ‘fed-ex’ questing and gem socketing equipment; you know all about that already. And a casual glance at a Youtube video will show you that Dekaron, like the hundreds of MMOs before it and the hundred likely to follow, is the same as the last MMORPG you were playing. You already know what Dekaron is. You already know what you’ll be doing should you decide to play it. What you’re looking for, is a reason.

And that reason is community; I’ve been saying it all along. It’s the same reason you’ll likely be playing any MMO for longer than a week, because deep down, that’s all we really care about. In Dekaron, that community is the hardcore PvP. You want to be the best? You want bragging rights? You want to grind for 100 hours for a set of armour that will guarantee that the next time you bump into FAGBOY27; he’ll be the one running from you? Dekaron is the place to do it. It’s as hardcore as they come, and it guarantees respect to those tough enough to survive it. Does that sound like your style? Does it sound like your kind of community? If it doesn’t, then we’re done here. There’s nothing else worth mentioning, and there’re better MMOs available just begging for your time. If it does, buckle up — it’s expansion time.

NEW MOON ON THE HORIZON
Dekaron is an old MMO, but that doesn’t mean it’s dead. New expansions, called ‘Actions’, are released every so often and with them come a whole range of new features – all free of charge. This week saw the release of Action 6; let’s take a peek at what it contained.

First, there’s the soon-to-be-infamous DK Square System, which more or less acts as a new medium for all out battle royale PvP. It’s an arena, of sorts, and as it’s inter-server and available to a wide range of levels, there’s a good chance that it’ll always be full. With it comes a new grading system that bestows titles to those with a high enough ranking,              new armour available only through extensive PvP success and a new Map (Abyss of Crespo) that will see PvP and PvE come together.

Second, there’s the Transup System, the allows players above level 131 access to a new quest, and after its completion, the ability to transform into a demon with new skills, stats and play styles depending on your class. Lastly, there’s the new Land of the Dead area, which steers away from grinding and repetitive questing, and focuses instead on team-based mission style play; and hidden within it, the long-awaited Tier 20 weapons and a range of new enemies and bosses to defeat.

So as you can see, there’s quite a lot to enjoy in Action 6, and thousands of players are enjoying it as we speak. A few hours ago, I was one of them, and I’m actually quite looking forward to getting back to it. After all, there are people to kill, and they won’t kill themselves now will they?
